BUENOS AIRES, December 12. /TASS/. The West tried to take advantage of the conflict in Ukraine to weaken Russia, but its sanctions policy has failed, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said during an official visit to Brazil.
“The West decided to take advantage of this conflict to weaken Russia and sanctions were imposed. Billions of euros and dollars are spent on Ukraine, which receives a lot of humanitarian aid and an abundance of weapons. What is the result? ” Fico said in an interview with the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S. Paulo. “Russian troops are conquering more and more territory, while the sanctions are not working and Ukraine can no longer hold talks from a position of strength,” he added.
Fico also regretted that other European Union countries were reluctant to take note of Bratislava’s position on the need to start negotiations. “The war in Ukraine is the issue that has made me the black sheep of the European family, because my views differ from those of other EU countries,” the Slovak Prime Minister noted.
During a June 14 meeting with the leadership of the Russian Foreign Ministry, President Vladimir Putin laid out the country’s conditions for resolving the situation in Ukraine. This includes the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Donbass and Novorossiya and Kiev, abandoning plans to join NATO. Moreover, Russia wants all Western sanctions to be lifted and demands that Ukraine commit to a non-aligned and nuclear weapons-free status. The rights, freedoms and interests of the Russian-speaking population must also be guaranteed.
